Echocardiogram (Echo)

An echocardiogram, often called an echo, is a safe and painless test that uses ultrasound to create real-time images of your heart. It allows me to assess the structure of your heart and how well it is functioning.

An echocardiogram does not require any special preparation and involves no radiation.

What happens during the test?

During the procedure, I (or a specially trained cardiac sonographer) will ask you to lie on a couch, partly on your left side. A small handheld probe is gently placed on the left side of your chest to record images of your heart using ultrasound waves.

You may feel light pressure from the probe, but the test is completely painless.

How long does it take?

  • The test usually takes 30–40 minutes
  • Non-invasive and painless
  • You can return to normal activities straight afterwards

I will review your echocardiogram results and explain them clearly, including whether any further tests or treatment are needed.
