Transoesophageal Echocardiogram (TOE)

A transoesophageal echocardiogram (TOE) is a specialised ultrasound test that produces very detailed images of your heart, particularly the heart valves and upper chambers.

Unlike a standard echocardiogram performed on the chest, a TOE uses a small ultrasound probe attached to a thin, flexible tube. This is gently passed through your mouth and into your oesophagus (the food pipe). As the oesophagus lies very close to the heart, this allows me to obtain exceptionally clear and accurate images that are not always possible with a standard echo.

Why might a TOE be recommended?

I may recommend a TOE when more detailed information is needed, for example to:

  • Assess heart valve disease
  • Look for blood clots within the heart
  • Investigate infection of the heart valves
  • Guide certain cardiac procedures

The test is carefully explained beforehand, and your comfort and safety are prioritised throughout.
